Snow Removal, Plowing Preparations for Manassas

The Manassas Department of Public Works wants to remind residents about the city's snow removal processes.

Large snowflakes were seen falling in Manassas Monday afternoon, and while it is not expected to stick around, it is good to take note on the city's snow removal and plowing procedures in case this is not our last brush with Old Man Winter.

The first priorities for treating roads are designated primary and snow emergency routes, such as Portner and Liberia avenues, according to the Manassas City website.

Residents are reminded not to park or leave their car on the marked snow emergency routes once a snow emergency is in place.

After these roads are passable, the second run snow routes, which are the school bus routes and collector streets will be treated.

If the storm continues crews may have to return to the first run/snow emergency routes to keep these streets clear and passable.

Plowing on the roads will begin when the snow reaches a depth of approximately 2 – 3 inches. Residential sections of the city will be plowed AFTER completion of all first/priority and second run routes.

The street department plows  twelve residential sections. Many of the streets will have already been completed on the first and second run routes. The remaining streets will be plowed curb to curb as completely as possible and treated where required.

Streets in residential areas will be treated only where necessary. The city does not put down sand and salt on all residential streets; depending on the forecast and conditions crews may treat intersections and hills.

Those who live on a privately maintained street should contact your neighborhood's Homeowners Association for information about your property’s snow removal plan.
