Water Department Earns Excellence Award

The award is a first for the city.

The Manassas City Water Department has earned a Silver Water Treatment Plant Performance Award for 2011 from the Virginia Department of Health. 

The award is a first for the department and is something Department of Public Works Director Mike Moon credits to a $6 million upgrade in operational improvements to the city's water treatment plant and a hard-working staff.

“The City of Manassas is honored and thrilled to be recognized by Virginia’s Health Department, as our dedicated water treatment plant team has worked diligently to ensure quality water for our customers,” Moon said.

The Virginia Department of Health Office of Drinking Water recognizes water systems that show excellence in performance and operations and for the treatment and distribution of drinking water to the public, according to a city-issued press release. Three levels of awards highlighting water systems that go above and beyond the established water treatment regulations are awarded, including gold, silver and bronze rankings, it said.

Manassas earned the Silver designation for excellence, which was awarded to Mayor Harry Parrish, Council Member Marc Aveni and Water Department team members present at the regularly-scheduled council meeting on May 21.
