World Trade Center Beams Arrive in Prince William County

Prince William County will officially took possession of four beams taken from the wreckage of the World Trade Center today.

A set of steel beams from the wreckage of the World Trade Center arrived in Prince William County today.

The Board of County Supervisors requested the beams as a tribute to the county residents who died in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The four steel beams weigh a combined 59,768 pounds. The county will hold a design competition to determine how to display the beams.

The county has been in the process of acquiring the beams for about a year. Board of County Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart, Dumfries District Supervisor Maureen Caddigan, Gainesville District Supervisor John Stirrup, County Executive Melissa Peacor, Historic Preservation Division Chief Brendon Hanafin and Assistant Fire Chief Hadden Culp traveled to New York and the New Jersey Port Authority in May to select the beams.

The county held a brief ceremony at the Sean T. Connaughton Plaza at the County Complex today at 9 a.m. to recognize the arrival of the beams, which were then taken to the Public Training Center in Nokesville.
