Black History Month Liberia Tour

In observance of Black History Month, February 11 tours of historic Liberia Plantation will include discussions on the lives of its slave population.

On the eve of the Civil War, Liberia was one of the largest and most successful plantations in western Prince William County. With the labor of more than 80 slaves, the plantation produced grains and vegetables sold commercially in Washington.

The Weir family that built the plantation also raised a large herd of Merino sheep as well as horses, cattle, and hogs.

The tour will offer visitors a rare glimpse into the 1825 plantation home, currently under restoration, and a discussion of typical slave work, food ways, and life at
plantations such as Liberia.

The grand old house, now a part of the Manassas Museum System, served as headquarters for both Confederate and Union officers during the Civil War.
