Osbourn High School Students Awarded Over $1M in Scholarships

Students leave scholarship reception with money and a bright academic future to look forward to.

Approximately $1.3 million was awarded to Osbourn High School students this year in the form of scholarships to prepare them for the next stage in academia: College.

The reception began with scholarship chairperson, Robin Campell, recognizing many students who were awarded scholarships prior to the reception held Thursday, June 2, at 7 p.m. at the local high school.

Then the attention switched to scholarships that hadn’t been given out yet. Sponsors came to the podium to say a few words about their scholarship and announce the winners, and student raced across the stage to shake hands and accept their scholarships.

Several students found themselves being called up numerous times. One such student was Leah Frederick, who had already received five scholarships before that night, and added the Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority Scholarship and Diane White Community Service Scholarship to the list.

Frederick will attend Pennsylvania State University.

“I’m really glad that I won some that I didn’t expect and they’ll help pay for books and other costs of college,” Frederick said.

Another recipient of two awards was Virginia Channing Harlow, who plans to study nursing at East Carolina University.

“I’m excited, because it’s a little less money that my parents have to spend for me to go to college,” Harlow said.

Harlow received the Osbourn Alumni Association Scholarship and the Manassas Education Association Scholarship.

Upon awarding the Manassas Education Scholarship, presenter Janice Mernin described Harlow as someone who, “Does whatever it takes to get the job done.”

Other scholarship recipients who received a large number of awards that evening were Victoriana Savas, Brian Horlick-Cruz and Angela Jividen.

After an hour of presenters dolling out awards and students crossing the stage, the reception ended with a few words to the class of 2011, and the students flocked to the exits, ready for their impending graduation.
