Osbourn to Play in Cedar Run District Championship

Osbourn beats Broad Run in overtime thriller to advance to the Cedar Run District Championship game against Stonewall.

The Osbourn High School boys basketball team won two of three games played last week.

The Eagles lost on Saturday to Potomac Falls but won the other two games against Stonewall and Broad Run earlier in the week.

It was the second time this season that Osbourn had topped Broad Run and just days later the Eagles found out they would be squaring off against the Spartans for a third time in the district semi-finals.

The stands were packed at Osbourn on Wednesday evening and the crowd was not disappointed as it turned out to be the most entertaining game of the season for the Eagles.

Both teams were scoring at will and neither team was able to build a big enough lead to truly have command of the game. Osbourn had a nine-point lead with less than two minutes remaining. The fans thought the victory was in the bag until Broad Run got hot and ended up tying the game at 100, going into over time.

The fans and the Eagles players were stunned but had to regroup for the extra period. In over time, Osbourn's experience and balance allowed them to take control early and they were able to hold on for a 109-104 victory.

Although Osbourn came out on top, the individual spot light was stolen by Broad Run junior, Nigel Johnson. The area's leading scorer poured in a whopping 55 points.

Osbourn also received outstanding performances from Robert Carter, who led the Eagles with 29 points and six rebounds. Raphael Edwards notched another double-double as he finished with 21 points and 14 boards. The other three starters also finished in double figures as Jay Lane scored 18, Corey Bedford had 17, and Cedrick Delaney put up 15.

Osbourn now advances to the Cedar Run District championship game with the victory and will battle the Stonewall Raiders for the title. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Osbourn so get out there and support the local teams.
