Stonewall's Season Over After Losing to Battlefield

Battlefield beat Stonewall Tuesday night to advance to the district championship game Friday night.

The boys basketball teams from Battlefield and Stonewall squared off in the district semi-finals Tuesday night, knowing the winner of the game would earn themselves a trip to the Cedar Run District championship game Friday night against Osbourn.

It was obvious that Battlefield was the team that wanted this game more as the Bobcats dominated Stonewall all night long. When all was said and done, Battlefield  won the game by a final score of 73-46.

The Bobcats now have a shot to win the district title while the Raiders will be starting preparation for next season as the loss marked the end of the road for them this year.

Battlefield took control early Tuesday night as they were playing smarter basketball and executing their game plan better than their opponent. At the end of the first quarter, Battlefield had a 16-8 lead over the Raiders.

The Bobcats offense exploded for 24 points in the second period and widened the gap even more. The Battlefield defense played tough and held Stonewall to 13 second-quarter points. When the teams went into the locker room at the half, the Raiders knew they had some work to do in the second half as Battlefield led 40-21.

When the second half began, Stonewall was still struggling mightily on the offensive end and Battlefield wasn’t great on offense, either, but still managed to outscore the Raiders 14-8 in the period.

Stonewall got an outstanding performance from Marquis Yates, who scored a game-high 25 points, but they did not get much production from anyone else. As a result of their struggles and solid play from Battlefield, the Raiders trailed 54-29 heading into the fourth quarter.

Stonewall was hoping to make one last run in the final stanza to at least give themselves a chance. Unfortunately, for the Raiders, the Bobcats could not be beat.

Stonewall had its best offensive quarter in the fourth, but Battlefield still managed to outscore them 19-17 in the period.

After winning the points battle in all four quarters, Battlefield ran away with a 73-46 victory to earn themselves a shot at the district title. The top performers in the game were:

Battlefield:                                                     Stonewall:

Ryan Swingle with 16 points                         Marquis Yates with 25 points

Terrell Walker with 13 points

Tarik Diggs with 10 points

Battlefield used a very balanced performance to win the game as they had three players score in double figures and a couple others who were just shy. Stonewall got 25 from Yates, but nobody else could get anything going.

As a result, the Raiders season has come to an end,  finishing the season with a 10-12 overall record. Battlefield improved their record to 13-8 overall and they will travel to Osbourn on Friday night to take on the Eagles for the district championship at 7 p.m.
