About 100 climbers are registered and all set to commemorate the 110 flights walked by hundreds of firefighters 11 years ago today at the World Trade Center in New York.

The Manassas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is on Sunday at Weichert Realty building located at 7900 Sudley Road.

The Manassas event is hosted by Stonewall Jackson Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department; all proceeds benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) which provides assistance to the surviving families of firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Registration for the event is $25 per person and organizers are hoping to get 150 participants registered, Stonewall Jackson Volunteer Firefighters/EMT Jenny Holden said.

Because the Weichert Realty building has only nine stories, climbers walk to the top 12 times. This equals 110 stories, just like what the firefighters climbed on Sept. 11, 2001.

Many firefighters do it in full gear which weighs between 60 and 70 pounds.

Participants take an elevator to the ground floor each time they end a climb.

Others make the climb carrying pictures and other commemorative items such as badges to remember those who died 11 years ago in the terrorist attacks.
