Located on the corner of Hoadly Road and Route 234, Coles District Volunteer Fire Department, formerly known as the Independent Hill Volunteer Fire Department, was started by six local residents to provide fire and rescue services to the area.
The department was established in 1949. Active, junior and associate members comprise of the current firefighting force. Its specialized membership size allow a variety of trained personnel to serve the community, including two-dozen volunteer firefighters and a nearly equal number of Emergency Medical Technicians, as well as certified EMT, CPR and fire suppression instructors.
