Flooded Roadways Make for Difficult Commute Tuesday

Up to four inches of rain fell in the western portions of the county during the overnight and early morning hours Tuesday, making for a difficult morning commute for some.

Officials in Prince William County are urging caution after heavy rains in the area left some area roads flooded Tuesday morning, and more rain is expected to fall in the coming days. According to WTOP, commuters had a difficult time navigating high standing water on Piper Lane in the Manassas-area of the county near the Broad Run VRE station. Piper Lane is located off of Rte. 28 near the railroad tracks and had to be shut down Tuesday morning because the nearby Broad Run overran its banks, leaving nearly a mile of the the roadway under water. Osbourn Park High School was the only Prince William County area high school to rank in the Washington, D.C. top 50 list, as compiled by Post’s Jay Mathews.

Another Fire Caused by Discarded Smoking Materials

A fire on Thursday at a townhouse on Beech Drive was the fourth fire in the city this year caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials, officials said.

Cigarette butts thrown into a plastic trashcan in a bathroom caused a fire in a townhouse in the Georgetown South neighborhood  Thursday, displacing two residents, according to Manassas City Fire Marshal Francis J.  Teevan. Fire and rescue units from the City of Manassas, Manassas Park, and Prince William County responded to the 9400 block of Beech Drive shortly after noon on Thursday May 17. Arriving firefighters found  smoke coming from the middle unit townhouse. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire that burned the first floor bathroom and caused smoke damage throughout the townhouse, according to Teevan. Drugs, Cash Seized from Room at Olde Towne Inn

Police arrested two men after executing a search warrant at the Manassas motel.

"The following information was supplied by the Manassas Park Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction." Detectives working with a special, multi-jurisdictional drug team made two arrests and found drugs in a motel room in Old Town Manassas after executing a search warrant. Officers with the Prince William-Manassas-Manassas Park Narcotics Task Force executed the warrant in Room 40 at Olde Towne Inn, located at 9403 Main Street, on March 28. Police said they didn't publicize details of the search at the time because they needed to protect their ongoing investigation into drug deals in the area. Little Improvement for Osbourn on Challenge Index

The annual index looks at how well a high school prepares students for college by evaluating the number of AP tests given in a year divided by the number of graduates that year.

Osbourn High School came in at number 172 out of 176 schools looked at by Washington Post education reporter Jay Mathews' for his annual High School Challenge Index. The index score is the number of college-level tests given at a school in 2011 divided by the number of graduates that year. Also noted are the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for free and reduced lunch (Subs. lunch), an indicator of poverty, and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career, called equity and excellence, (E&E). The index is only how many take the test not how well they did on it so the ranking really doesn't matter to me. Unfortunately, general population doesn't seem to grasp this and they assume our schools are not good. I would be more interested in how many pass that take it. More will take the test because as I hear it, they are forced to...even kids who didn't take the AP class but are only dual …   more ›

Tropical Storm Alberto is expected to bring rain and a chance of thunderstorms to the area this week.  Alberto was swirling off the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina Sunday and was projected to take a northeast track out to sea by as early as Monday. Tropical Storm conditions are not expected on shore, but high surf and dangerous rip currents could occurr along the coasts of Georgia, South Carolina, and northeastern Florida for the early part of the week, according to the National Weather Service. There's a chance of showers and possible thunderstorms everyday this week in the northern Virgina area until Thursday. The forecast indicates the soggy weather will make way for sunshine by Friday. Register This Week For Alzheimer's Charity Basketball Tournament

Register by Friday at 6 p.m. to participate in the June 2, 4-Get-Me-Not Tournament.

Hit the courts for a cause in June by participating in the 4-Get-Me-Not Tournament to raise money for Alzheimer's research. The tournament is scheduled for Saturday, June 2 at 2 p.m. at the Manassas Park Community Center gym.  Three person teams will play in the tournament which is double elimination with 15-minute or 21-point games. There's an $80 entry fee per team. The registration deadline is 6 p.m. on Friday.   Each team may have up to four players on the roster. Each player will receive a t-shirt for participating.  Teams can register in person at the community center at 99 Adams St. in Manassas Park. Fire Scene Snarls Traffic on Centreville Road—Again

Traffic stalled on Centreville Road twice on Friday after firefighters were called back to Byrd Tractor where a fire burned that morning.

Police closed parts of Centreville Road for a second time on Friday after firefighters were called back to a Yorkshire business that was on fire earlier that day. Just before 9 p.m. on Friday, a portion of the 7200 block of Centreville Road near the Fairfax County border was closed by Prince William County Police while firefighters from several departments again responded to Byrd Tractor, where a oil tank exploded that morning. It is not immediately clear what brought firefighters back to the one-story building some 12 hours after the fire was brought under control.  Centreville Road northbound was reduced to just one lane right in front of Byrd Tractor Friday night.
