The abundance of Police and Forensic investigation TV shows also adds to the perception and exposes more people to the fact that there are evil people, and that evil people down't always look the part. So it is mainly a matter of perception. There is always a possibility of becoming a victim of violent crime, especially if you don't pay attention to your surroundings. Situational awareness and having means of protection will not always prevent, but will reduce the possibilities of becoming a victim. And will give you an advantage over those lacking them in order to survive.
