Speak Out: Obama Backs Same-Sex Marriage

Will Obama's announcement hurt his chances to carry Virginia in 2012 as he did in 2008?

Facing pressure to take a stand, President Barack Obama on Wednesday said he supports same-sex marriage. In an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts, Obama (D) described his “evolution” on the issue through talks with friends, and reflection on military personnel and members of his own staff who, he said, “are not able to commit themselves in a marriage,” adding that “at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.” Excerpts of the interview are scheduled to appear on ABC’s World News with Diane Sawyer on Wednesday evening. The full interview is scheduled to appear on ABC’s Good Morning America on Thursday morning. …

Yorkshire Restaurant Clear Favorite in Best Breakfast Poll

Yorkshire Restaurant clear winner with 80 percent of the vote.

Hear ye, Hear ye, Let it be known to all that Yorkshire Manor has the best breakfast in all thy lands belonging to his majesty Prince William by decree of his royal subjects.  Translation: Prince William, Manassas and Manassas Park residents have spoken. Yorkshire Restaurant has the best friggin' breakfast on this side of Bull Run and, quite possibly, in the world.  We decided to have a little fun this week by using Yorkshire’s Old English theme to announce its total domination of this week’s Readers’ Choice poll.  The restaurant, named for the area where it’s located in eastern Prince William County, has a very loyal following. There might be more people loyal to Yorkshire than to the actual British crown.  Your Patch editor and her food …

What is it about Kony 2012?

"Most viral video" compels millions

Joseph Kony wasn't exactly a household name a week ago, but now more than 100 million people know his sweaty face and many of his dirty secrets.  The Ugandan warlord responsible for displacing and murdering thousands was featured in a controversial 30-minute video by Invisible Children (IC), viewed more than 112 million times around the world as of Monday—faster than any video to date.  The footage, which summarizes part of the central African human rights battle, has angered millions and stirred many millions more. Analytics company Visible Measures labels it the “most viral video" ever. Invisible Children’s aim is to make Ugandan guerrilla warlord Joseph Kony and his crimes "infamous" by asking viewers to use social media and contact …

Leadership Tactics of Robert E. Lee

Using Lee's leadership approach in today's world.

In the midst of local and national elections, a compelling question rises to the surface:  What do we want in a leader?  Quality attributes of military leaders such as George Washington and Robert E. Lee seem fleeting in today’s world.  We can learn a thing or two from the leadership style of Robert E. Lee, one of the most beloved generals in history. Lee’s leadership approach encompassed empathy, compassion, respect for others, discernment and honesty.  Empathy and compassion were evident through his interactions with others.  He desired to communicate with his commanders on a personal level and openly expressed concern, sympathy and acceptance of others.  During a conversation with General James Longstreet, Lee offered support and …

With voters in Florida being turned off by the GOP candidates attacks on one another, maybe they should consider the leadership tactics of Lee (empathy, compassion, respect) when dealing with others. Just saying. We would probably get to the heart of our issues too and ways we can fix them, if we weren't focused on bringing each other down.   more ›

Letter to the Editor: An Endorsement for Mayor

Manassas Citizens Advisory and School Engagement (C.A.S.E) Council Member Jill Spall endorses Andrew Harrover for Mayor.

I am writing to endorse Manassas City Vice Mayor Andrew Harrover for Mayor. In my following of the many “issues” that appear to have befallen Manassas, I see many people putting forth a lot of effort to make grand gestures toward naming areas that contribute to the "issues" facing our city. I am trying today to put forth an option that I hope our citizens will cling to as a symbol of action with a track record of getting things done. Some of the things I’ve seen Andy research, champion and implement during his tenure as vice mayor include Manassas Next, city-friendly projects  (including Battle St. and Bike Trails), Education Forward  and forward-thinking city growth plans (including Airport Authority involvement and capacity reduction on …
