Baseball Roundup: Week of May 7th

The regular season is wrapping up, and area baseball teams look for momentum heading into tournaments.

Each area baseball team played two important games last week, heading into tournament season. The Osbourn Park Yellow Jackets (OP) won both games for the week. They opened up with a game against Gar-Field, which they were able to win easily by a final score of 7-2.  But the Jackets met a tougher match later in the week in the Forest Park Bruins. Still, OP was able to hang on once again as they topped Forest Park, 5-1. With the two victories, Osbourn Park now has an overall record of 14-6 to go along with a 9-3 record in the Cardinal District. The Osbourn Eagles were also hoping to build some momentum of their own before this week's tournaments.  The Eagles squared off against cross-town rival Stonewall on Thursday in a district match-up. …

Baseball Roundup: Week of April 30

Local baseball teams see plenty of action this week.

The Manassas area high school baseball teams had a full slate of games this week. Osbourn and Osbourn Park each played three games, while Stonewall played two. It was a very important week for all three teams as the regular season is winding down. Each team is doing what they can to better their position in the district standings before the playoffs begin. The Osbourn Eagles began the week on a positive note as they opened up with a win against Gar-Field. The Eagles had a decent game offensively, pushing five runs across, and got a very solid performance on the pitching end. The final score of the game ended up being, 5-1. The Eagles were able to continue their winning ways in the second game of the week. It was a contest against …

Baseball Round Up: Week of April 23

Local baseball teams have winning week.

All three Manassas area high school baseball teams scored wins this week.   Osbourn, Osbourn Park, and Stonewall each played twice and the teams posted a combined 5-1 record for the week. Osbourn Park was able to get back on track after hitting a brief rough patch a couple weeks ago. The Yellow Jackets began the week by beating Freedom (Prince William), 17-1. Osbourn Park dominated the entire game offensively and defensively.  The second game of the week for the Yellow Jackets was against Hylton, one of the best teams in the area this year. Many believed the game would be very close and low-scoring, but the Yellow Jackets  had other ideas. The team got off to a good start offensively and was able to tally eight runs against a team with …

RGIII Brings Cool Factor to Washington

Redskins hope the highly talented quaterback can bring the team succes on and off the field.

If you're wondering why everyone in your office is sporting braids and insisting on being called by their initials this morning, you can thank one person—Robert Griffin III. Last night the Washington Redskins selected Griffin—more commonly known as RGIII—with the second overall pick in the NFL draft, culminating a months long lovefest with the highly talented Heisman winning quarterback out of Baylor University. With the pick, the Redskins and their fans hope to end a generation’s worth of mediocre play at football's most important position, and bring an infusion of excitement to a team seemingly incapable of escaping the gravitational pull of its black hole of futility. RGIII's physical gifts are a big reason for the buzz he has generated…

Athlete of the Month

Ryan Flesch: A Source of Excellence

Coming off a very successful junior season, Osbourn Park senior Ryan Flesch looks to help guide the Yellow Jacket soccer team to postseason success.

Off the field, he holds over a 4.0 grade point average and will be attending the College of William and Mary in the fall. On the field, his resume holds the same weight.  Osbourn Park (OP) senior Ryan Flesch has played an influential role for his seasoned soccer team this year; he already has five goals and six assists. But this may not come as a surprise to some because Flesch was primed for success from an early age. “My parents got me involved when I was around five," Flesch said. "The reason being that they wanted me involved in a physical activity, but it [soccer] soon became something more serious in middle school." Flesch was a member of the Olympic Development Program during his middle school years, and continued to play in the …

Baseball Roundup: Week of April 16

Eagles baseball defeats top team in the district so far this season; while the Yellow Jackets of Osbourn Park suffer two losses, slipping to third place.

Baseball season is now half-way done,  and things are really starting to heat up. Each of the Manassas-area teams played two games this past week and some of the results were rather surprising.  Osbourn Park, who got off to a hot start, lost both of their games this past week. The first contest of the week for the Yellow Jackets was on Tuesday as they squared off against Forest Park. The Bruins have also had a solid season to this point and many were looking forward to a close and entertaining game between the two teams. Instead, it turned out to be a lopsided victory for Forest Park as they breezed past Osbourn Park with a 7-1 win. The Yellow Jackets played again on Friday night, hoping to bounce back from a frustrating loss. This time …

Weekly Baseball Roundup: Week of April 9

Osbourn Park looks like the team to beat early on in the season, winning both games played last week and bringing their overall record to 8-2.

All three Manassas-area high schools including Osbourn, Stonewall, and Osbourn Park played two baseball games this past week. The Yellow Jackets of Osbourn Park continued to stay hot, while Osbourn had an up and down week and Stonewall continued to struggle on the diamond. Stonewall opened the week with a match-up against the Battlefield Bobcats. The Raiders struggled to stay in the game as Battlefield dominated offensively. When it was all said and done, Stonewall suffered a 9-3 loss at the hands of the Bobcats. The Raiders played their second game on Friday evening against Patriot, the most recently built high school in the area. Stonewall was hoping to bounce back after a tough loss earlier in the week, but were unable to capitalize the…

Weekly Baseball Roundup

Osbourn Park players named MVPs in local tournament.

This week was spring break for all of the Manassas area schools but that didn't stop the area teams from playing plenty of baseball. Osbourn traveled to Myrtle Beach to play in a spring break tournament while Stonewall played in the "Let's Play Two" tournament along with Osbourn Park who hosts the event. The Osbourn Eagles had a solid showing in Myrtle Beach as they won two and lost two. The Eagles opened up with a win on the first day as they knocked off Nation's Ford of South Carolina by a score of 5-2. Osbourn struggled on day two of the tournament as they lost 11-8 to Watertown, New York in the first game before losing again to Ronald Regan of North Carolina by a score of 4-2. The Eagles redeemed themselves on day three though as they …
