Osbourn Park Teacher Awarded $2,000 from Virginia Lottery

Ms. Christina Ross hit it big-and she didn't even have to gamble.

Wednesday wasn't the average dreaded hump day for Osbourn Park High teacher Christina Ross. A day of teaching seniors suffering from spring fever was well rewarded when she discovered she'd won the Virginia Lottery Super Teacher Award which comes with a personal $2,000 check. Award co-sponsor Supply Room Inc. also gave her a $2,000 classroom credit for supplies. "Well, I'm going quit my second job," a smiling Ross said when asked what she was going to do with her award money. The gift came as a total surprise to the Advanced Placement government teacher. School administrators lured Ross and her class to the Osbourn Park library for the big reveal by making up a story about something being wrong with the roof over her classroom. School …

Osbourn Park High, Manassas Park High Compete in Maryland Wrestling Match

The high schools are "neighbors" located on the same street, Euclid Avenue, but in different jurisdictions.

Osbourn Park High competed against its closest neighbor, Manassas Park High School in a high-powered wrestling match this weekend at Magruder High, in  Rockville, MD. Though the schools are on the same street, Euclid Avenue, their placing in the tournament were very different. Osbourn Park was deemed the champions of the match while Manassas Park finished last out of the 10 teams, Manassas Park High wrestling Coach Mark Payne said. Manassas Park's own Anthony Pinto was the only tournament placer for the high school. "Anthony had a great tournament. Anthony wrestled heavyweight for us, weighing only about 225 pounds, Payne said. "He is a tough competitor and should be very proud of himself. There was some pretty tough teams here and he hung…

Osbourn Park Graduate Achieves Perfect Attendance

Seth Opoku-Yeboah opens up about how he reached his goal of perfect attendance throughout grade school.

Seth Opoku-Yeboah is grateful that his parents gave him the opportunity to go to school in the United States when they moved here from Ghana—so much so that he never missed a day of class. I was not always an easy road to perfect attendance. Once in the seventh grade he was very sick and had a bad cough, and for weeks he thought he would have to take a day off. When he voiced his concern, his mother told him there was nothing he could accomplish at home. He agreed and went to school. Opoku-Yeboah speaks of going to school as an obvious decision. Even during his senior year at Osbourn Park High School (OPHS), he didn't feel obligated to skip school. "I was accepted to William and Mary in November, and for six or seven months I was coming to…

High School Graduates Look to the Future Despite Tough Job Prospects

Study finds 37 percent of high school graduates from years 2006, 2007 and 2008 are employed full time, compared to just 16 percent that graduated during the recession.

After walking across the stage and receiving their diplomas, many high school students will attend college, get a job or both. But no matter what direction life takes them, most experts agree these graduates will face a difficult job market. According to a recent study released by the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University, three in 10 high school graduates are employed full-time. The study also points out that 37 percent of graduates from years 2006, 2007 and 2008  are employed full time, compared to just 16 percent that graduated during the recession.  The survey further characterizes high school graduates’ first jobs as “low-paying, temporary jobs.” So in an unstable economy, many graduates may be …
