Traffic Shifts Onto New Bridge in Gainesville This Weekend

Virginia transportation officials want drivers to avoid that area of Gainesville this weekend.

Vehicle wheels will finally begin rolling across the new bridge near Route 29 and Linton Hall Road in Gainesville after this weekend.

Traffic was due to begin using the $200 million bridge built by the Virginia Department of Transportation earlier this month, but the traffic shift was delayed by a sold-out Jimmy Buffett concert in Bristow.

The traffic shift begins at 9 p.m. this evening and ends at noon Sunday. Crews need to construct a tie-in to the new bridge and pave and stripe the area, authorities said.  In order to do this, some traffic lanes have to be closed.

Only one lane of traffic in each direction will be open on Route 29 and Linton Hall Road and some turning movements will be restricted, VDOT officials said.
Police will be at the scene to help control traffic, but it is best to avoid the area by taking Interstate 66 or Route 15.

The bridge was built to eliminate the at-grade railroad crossing where numerous car versus train crashes have occurred over the years.
