Gas Tanker Overturns in Bristow, Prompts Evacuations (UPDATE)

Marsteller Middle School in Bristow is a shelter for voluntary evacuees. Expect congestion all day Friday on Sudley Manor Drive as HAZMAT crews work to clean up the spill.

Part of Sudley Manor Drive in Bristow remains closed and a voluntary evacuation of the surrounding neighborhood is underway after a fuel tanker filled with gas overturned late Thursday.

The tanker, believed to be carrying more than 8,000 gallons of fuel, overturned in front of the Arby's restaurant, near Safeway grocery store on Braemar Nature Trail just off Sudley Manor around 11 p.m., Prince William County fire officials said.

The driver of the tanker suffered minor, non life-threatening injuries.

Patrons and employees of the grocery store and other shops in the Braemar Village Center were evacuated shortly after the incident. The center will remain closed until further notice, police said.

A second, voluntary evacuation is underway for residents of the Braemar community.

The voluntary evacuation applies to Braemar residents living closest to the scene and to anyone who smells fumes or thinks they feel sick as a result of the spill, Prince William County Police spokesman Jonathan Perok said.

Call the county communications center at 703-792-6500 if you feel sick, unsafe or overwhelmed by the fumes.

Residents residing on Merrimont Trace Circle and Manor Hall Court shouldn't try to start their vehicles or drive away from their homes;  county officials will come and take them to the temporary shelter set up at Marsteller Middle School at 14000 Sudley Manor Drive, according to a press release issued Friday by Prince William County Police.

Motorists moving through the area Friday morning should expect delays as Sudley Manor Drive between Dunbarton Drive and Linton Hall Road will remain closed as HAZMAT teams work to clean up the spill.

Foam trucks from Dulles International Airport and Fairfax County were called in to help officials on the scene trace the spilled fuel which is expected of leaking into the nearby Broad Run, InsideNova reports.

The tanker's destination was unclear, but the closest gas station in the area is one operated by Safeway at the corner of Linton Hall Road and Sudley Manor Drive
