Dog Found With Legs, Mouth Duct Taped Recovers, Becomes Service Animal

Ozzy, a West Highland Terrier, was abducted from his home in April, duct taped and thrown into the trunk of a car.

Ozzy, a West Highland Terrier that was abducted, duct-taped and thrown in the trunk of a car following a romantic quarrel has recovered from his injuries and is now giving back to the community that helped him.

Police said a suspect broke into the Manassas-area home on April 17 and took Ozzy and another dog after a dispute the suspect had with the dogs' owner.

The body of Ozzy's companion was found duct taped and in a trash bag near Copeland Drive in Manassas. Ozzy managed to escaped but was seriously injured, Prince William County Police said.

Ozzy underwent surgery on his left leg at the Veterinary Surgical Referral Practice in Manassas and continues to recover, according to workers at the Prince William Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PWSPCA). The organization helped raised money for Ozzy's surgery after his owner said she couldn't afford the entire procedure which was performed for a discount by the practice's doctors.

"He is still limping a little but his leg is getting better. He does range of motion exercises on the leg that was injured twice daily and just started 20 minute walks twice a day," PWASPCA staff posted the group's Website. "After multiple visits to the vet in May, June and July, the bones set in the operation were determined to be in proper alignment and the placement of the pins looked good. The bone needs additional time to heal since there was so much trauma to his leg."

Staff said Ozzy has been made a service dog and goes to work with his owner each day.  The organization didn't give details about where the two work.

Police said 44-year-old Khanh Hoang Hong is charged with burglary, two counts of felony animal cruelty and two counts of grand larceny (animal) in connection with the incident.

Hong is expected to appear in court district on his charges on Sept. 4.
