Police: Man Charged With Texting While Driving After Striking Officer

The driver of a car that struck a police officer who was conducting a routine traffic stop on Route 28 is now charged in connection to the incident, Manassas City Police said. 

Alexander M. Bacon, 25, of Herndon, is charged with texting while driving, reckless driving, driving on a suspended operator's license (third offense) and failure to to proceed with caution or yield right of way by lane change to stationary vehicle displaying lights. 

The officer's injuries were not life-threatening, spokesperson Adrienne Helms said. Witnesses told police that the officer was speaking to the driver of a stopped car on the 8700 block of Centreville Road, when a black Ford swerved off the road and struck her and the vehicle.

Bacon voluntarily came to a stop on Phoenix Drive, Helms said. One lane on Route 28 northbound was closed for several hours after the incident.
